Course Description
Premature infants often present with feeding, swallowing, and respiratory problems due to immaturity of their body systems, including gastrointestinal and respiratory systems. Current medical advancements have lowered the gestational age for survival and increased the number of medically fragile infants now found in the NICU. This seminar will focus on the anatomical, physiological, medical, and developmental characteristics related to feeding, swallowing, and respiratory problems in premature infants. Applicable to the birth to three population. Handouts included in PDF file format.
Learning Outcomes
1. Describe the significant anatomical, physiological, and medical characteristics influencing feeding, swallowing and respiratory function of premature infants.
2. Describe the significant aspects of the development of feeding, swallowing, and respiratory function in premature infants.
3. Describe the impact of ventilation & tracheotomy on the premature infant.
4. Identify signs that indicate the infant’s readiness for oral feeding.
